On August 30, 2025, Centro CSO, a grassroots organization based in Boyle Heights, organized a march and rally in East Los Angeles to mark the 55th anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium at Ruben Salazar Park.
On August 29, 1970, approximately 30,000 individuals participated in a march in East Los Angeles, representing one of the most significant demonstrations within the Mexican American community, to express opposition to the Vietnam War. Participants censured the disproportionate fatalities among Latinos in the conflict. It was a peaceful and cultural demonstration; however, the protest was disrupted by violence and police action from sheriffs of Los Angeles County, leading to chaos, injuries, and three deaths, including Ruben Salazar, a prominent journalist from the Los Angeles Times and an outspoken member of the Chicano community.
